Easy Biscuits And Sausage Gravy – Classic Southern Comfort

There’s nothing quite like starting the morning with biscuits and sausage gravy—a timeless Southern breakfast that’s creamy, hearty, and deeply satisfying. Soft buttermilk biscuits smothered in rich, peppery sausage gravy create the ultimate comfort meal for weekends, brunches, or anytime you need something warm and cozy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can jumbo buttermilk biscuits (or homemade biscuits)
  • Optional: melted butter for brushing
  • 1 pound pork breakfast sausage (mild or spicy)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 23 cups milk (whole milk preferred)
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1/21 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven according to biscuit package instructions (usually 350–375°F). Bake until golden. Brush with melted butter if desired.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, crumble and cook sausage until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the sausage and stir. Cook 1–2 minutes to remove raw flour taste.
  4. Gradually pour in the milk while stirring constantly. Cook until thick and creamy. Add more milk for a thinner gravy.
  5. Season with salt and plenty of black pepper.
  6. Split the warm biscuits and pour sausage gravy over the top. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use whole milk for the richest gravy. Add cayenne for heat or fresh herbs for extra flavor. For a lighter version, use turkey sausage or plant-based substitutes.
